The first coin bearing the word peso was minted in silver during the Second Mexican Empire in 1866. It was minted with the effigy of Maximilian I, whose engravers were the Mexican artists Navalón, Ocampo and Spíritu. Finally, the coin was very similar in design to the contemporary 5 French franc coin bearing the effigy of Napoleon III. The one engraved by Louis Charles Bouvet.
