TO GO FURTHER
The first krugerrand was struck on July 3, 1967. The purpose of this coin is to promote the private hoarding of gold. At the end of the 1960s, South Africa accounted for 75% of gold production in Western countries, and the promotion of gold seems vital to sustain it. This need became even more acute with the abandonment of the gold standard in 1971. Putting into circulation a coin of relatively low value puts gold within the reach of small savers.
